I am hosting Thanksgiving Dinner at my house this year. I think it will be the first time ever and I am honored that Mamita is letting me carry on the family tradition.
I have been particularly GRATEFUL for things in my life over the past few years.
So to celebrate that, I decided to make this burlap banner for my living room mantle…
A little simple DIY project to help decorate for my favorite holiday. For those of you that know me, I promise food is NOT the only reason I love Thanksgiving.
Here is a step-by-step guide or scroll to the bottom to purchase a banner.
Step 1: supplies – a piece of burlap fabric, twine, scissors, paint, alphabet stencil, stencil brush, glue gun, burlap flowers or any other decorative items
Step 2: I found alphabet stencils were expensive so I reached out to my sister Karen who owns a Cricut machine. It’s perfect for creating stencils. She picked a font and made a set of alphabet stencils on card stock. Simple and free (well, for me at least).
Step 3: I cut out 8 equal sized rectangular pieces of burlap; large enough for one letter with enough space to cut out a triangle from the bottom.
Step 4: I used a scrap piece of card stock to outline the triangle and then I cut each piece of burlap.
Step 5: I painted the letters onto the burlap. I used the stencil, paint and a stencil brush. Any type of paint would probably work. And if you don’t have a stencil brush, a foam brush or small paint brush would work as well.
Step 6: Fold or iron a crease to create a pocket for the twine to hang the letters.
Step 7: Run the twine below the creases and use dots of glue to seal the hems. Evenly space out each letter along the twine.
Step 8: Attach any decorative pieces (flowers, ribbon, etc) with glue and hang!
Happy Thanksgiving! -Kathy
