Every year our family and friends attend an event that celebrates Three Kings Day (also known as Feast of the Epiphany or El Dia de los Reyes).
This event is a BIG deal for our family…we usually have a group of 20-30 that attend the yearly event. It’s a semi-formal event of Puerto Rican food, family, friends, Salsa, Merengue and plenty of dancing!
The Three Kings Celebration is a fundraiser for college scholarships. It has become tradition that our family and friends contribute as much as possible to this fundraising event by purchasing a boat load of raffle tickets for prizes. See, there is another family that attends this event. We’ll call them the “Losing Team” 😉 And over the years the competition has grown. WHICH FAMILY can win the most raffle prizes?!
When the raffle ticket numbers are announced, the show is ON. You’ll find both families playfully taunting each other or complaining that one group”sabotaged” the raffle. It is amusing and FUN.
In the end, it’s all for a good cause. We are all contributing to a child’s education and we are happy to support that!
Karen and I take pride in salvaging, upcycling, recycling and reusing. We also take pride in attending this event. So when we started The Salvaged Boutique it only made sense that we would offer a donation.
Reusing wood from pallets has become trendy lately and we joined the bandwagon.
Many of my colleagues attend this event and we represent many different Latino/Hispanic heritages, so I knew I wanted The Salvaged Boutique to donate something to reflect that.
I found an idea for using wood from an old pallet to create a wine rack and I went to our trusted Carpenter (Karen’s husband, Bob) for help! Bob has SKILLZ. He took on the challenge and boy did he come through!
Karen recently used her Cricut machine to print a set of letter stencils that I used on the burlap banner project. I reused those stencils. I also had her print a smaller set for me. I used paint I had on hand and I stenciled letters on two wine racks, added a coat of polycrylic to protect the paint and ended with these…
Each wood pallet wine rack, along with one bottle of wine and four wine glasses will be donated to the Three Kings Celebration. We can’t wait to get our dancing shoes on. Watch out “Losing Team”….we’re taking home all of the prizes!
Happy Salvaging! -Kathy
