Some of you may have seen Lego table ideas on Pinterest or maybe you’ve seen people posting this idea on Facebook. What’s great about our job is that we “Pin” and then we actually make it, because it’s what we do. 🙂 I loved this idea from the start and knew if I ever got the chance to make it I would. Where was Pinterest when my son was younger? Oh well, now some other kid can enjoy it!
Kathy and I were on a mega pick when I saw this vintage two-tiered end table. Some of you might have one at home or you’ve seen this vintage style table at thrift stores or yard sales. They are fairly easy to find.
What you need for this DIY project:
- A two-tiered end table
- Primer
- Paint (I used spray paint for this project)
- Wood filler (only if you need to fill in holes, this one had plugs missing from the screw holes)
- Drill (to make your starter hole)
- Jigsaw (to cut the opening)
- A basket
- A sheet or two smaller sheets of Lego base plate, these can be found at Toy’s r Us or you can order online. The one I used was 48×48 (Lego measurements).
- Lastly, some kind of thick adhesive to glue down the base plate.
Once I got the end table home, I measured the top so I could search for a basket to store Lego pieces. Once I found a basket, Bob flipped the basket over and traced it onto the top tier of the table. He then used a drill to make a starter hole so the jigsaw blade could fit inside. Once the hole was made he used the jigsaw to cut just a bit smaller than the line he traced. This way the lip of the basket would sit on the opening. Some sanding on the opening may be required.
I prepped the table by wiping it down to get it ready for primer. I used a small roller and paint brush.
Once the primer was dry, I took it outside where it was spray painted blue. I call it Lego Blue, I wanted a color common in Legos. Any color would work, you could even match it your decor.
After it’s all dry I inserted the basket and glued on the base plate (I used Loctite Adhesive Caulk). You can use any kind of thick adhesive to glue down the base plate(s).
This a fun play table your kids will enjoy.
And you’ll enjoy it because it keeps your child’s Lego’s neat and tidy. 😉
It can be painted any color to fit someone’s decor, so it’s not an eyesore in your living space. It would also be great for a playroom or a daycare for the older kids.
Enjoy and let your kids imagination create something great!

Hi Kathy and Karen
What a fantastic resource you have here! I’ve pinned it for my future reference because I know there will be some furniture painting in my very near future.
Thanks for putting this together

How did you cut the LEGO base?
Hi Pam, thanks for commenting! If you’re referring to the gray base, we didn’t have to cut it. It fit perfectly on the table top.
