To me, it’s simple: I set a goal and I get it done.
I have always been determined. Mamita and Karen tell me this often. Sometimes my goals are challenging and a little difficult to accomplish. Sometimes they are simple and I finish with ease. I have never let poverty (we were pretty darn poor growing up), my sex, race, age or academic struggles get in my way.
I don’t think I have ever used any of these as an excuse for not accomplishing something.
My full time career is male dominated, and although there have been a few bumps along the way, none of the little “hills” have ever kept me from accomplishing what I set my mind to or from being treated with respect.
Why am I writing about this?
Out of frustration.
For the first time in my life I really feel judged. Well, we all probably feel judged at times during our lives, but this is different. I’m not sure why, so maybe writing about it will help me sort it out.
When we set out to find a small workshop for The Salvaged Boutique I really thought it would be fairly simple. A small but realistic budget for a small bare bones space that will allow me and Karen to artistically grow together. You see, we both feel working separately in our homes is stunting our growth.
What I have encountered so far is judgement, egotistical behavior, rejection and plain out rudeness.
Rejection from those who feel our business and talents don’t fit the criteria of an artistically “elite” group. Egotistical behavior from commercial realtors who have underestimated me and the amount of research I do about an available piece of property before I contact them. Rudeness from those who have felt that our small business and small budget is beneath them and “impossible”.
Well, NOTHING is impossible. This experience has been frustrating, to say the least, but it has made me more determined.
On a positive note, we found some people who have tried to help us along this process. A few weeks ago we published a small post on Facebook asking for our local friends to help us find a space or point us in the right direction and the response was amazing!
Karen and I will find a space. We’re so close! When we do, you will be the first to know.
Thank you for reading and for all of your support.
It’s because of so many of you, your referrals and your encouraging words that we already feel successful. Your loyalty is what strengthened my determination!!
